Drury Design of Glen Ellyn, in collaboration with Ginny Blasco Design, recently won a third ASID interior design award for a spectacular kitchen remodel in Wilmette, Illinois. Layout and traffic flow was of prime importance for this active family.

Today, we’ll talk to the two designers who collaborated on the award-winning kitchen design.

This project is the team’s third ASID interior design award—in 2014, a multi-cook kitchen remodel in Burr Ridge and a reimagined rec room in Glen Ellyn each won ASID Illinois Excellence Awards.

Gail Drury, CMKBD, President of Drury Design Kitchen and Bath Studio.

What makes this project’s design unique?

Layout and traffic flow was of prime importance for this active family. The updated transitional kitchen layout flows naturally through the new space, from the small existing location into the new large addition. We designed three completely separate zones for different functions.

This project gives you an idea of how a wide variety of material choices can be used together to express a homeowner’s personality and lifestyle. A collaborative design process is key in developing the perfect design for a client’s space.

How do kitchen designers and interior designers collaborate?

Kitchen designers and interior designers make a great team. We love working with Ginny Blasco. Over the years, we’ve developed a system. Drury Design comes up with basic floor plan options. We brainstorm together with the client about which one best fills the client’s needs and lifestyle. Ginny comes back with ideas that we may never have thought of. Only then do we put our ideas together to come up with the perfect plan. The interior designer puts together all of the material and finish options and we present them as a team. Customers love how this team dynamic works and how it enhances our finished product. They feel like they are covered from all directions from function to finish and fit.

What does winning the ASID award mean to you – Drury Design?

Winning the ASID award is a big honor. We are competing against some of the top interior designers in the country and we are honored to be considered as part of that group. This is our third major award in the past two ASID interior design competitions with Ginny Blasco.

What makes this project unique?

The home’s location and its historical value to the community make this project unique.

In this historic family home, the intention was to maintain the historic attributes of the home and add a conservatory-like addition to expand the family room, kitchen, and mudroom.

How do kitchen designers and interior designers collaborate?

Gail and I have worked on many projects together. And, like any good partnership, there is a rhythm to our design. There is always an area of the project that we each have strong opinions toward and we work to arrive at the best possible solution that meets the clients’ goals and renders a cohesive and beautiful design. Working with Gail has opened up other directions that I might not have traveled, and I think she would probably say the same thing. I do like to let her know when she brings a new idea in and it was something that I don’t think I would ever have thought of for the project. So you always have to listen and keep your options open when you are in a designing partnership.

What does winning the ASID award mean to you – Ginny Blasco Design?

I have been an ASID member since I was in school. ASID is our ‘Professional Voice’ for Interior Designers. Chicago is in an elite group of global cities and is known for its beauty and resources. My peer group in Chicago includes some of the best Interior Designers in the country. To receive recognition from such a community of talent is an honor. The bar is set very high in Chicago; our office works toward delivering to this level and exceeding it. This is a co-award for Gail and I—it is ‘Our Project’—and we are a part of two design firms that collaborate and enjoy working together!”
