Trends Top 50 American Kitchen Interview with Janice Teague, CKD, CBD
Congrats go out to Janice Teague, CKD, CBD, of Drury Design in Glen Ellyn on designing one of Trends Magazine’s Top 50 American Kitchens 2013-14. Designed for a professional chef and her family, this fresh transitional kitchen took first place in NKBA Chicago’s 2013 Midwest Design Visions contest.
The double award-winning kitchen serves multiple purposes, including hosting intimate cooking classes as well as large groups of people. Janice was challenged to design the space to include large counter work surfaces, a student observation center, and room for additional appliances – all in a way that feels like a home, not a commercial kitchen.
Trends Top 50 American Kitchen Designer Interview with Janice Teague
How would you describe the project’s concept?
There were multiple objectives for this kitchen remodel. The owner is a professional chef and required a classroom setting to hold cooking classes for small groups of people. In addition, the owners entertain frequently so a flexible gathering space with fluid traffic flow and a full bar was essential.
What inspired your vision?
The client had a very definitive idea of the style for her kitchen. The inspiration for the layout and materials began by having a clear understanding of the owner’s aesthetic, necessities, and wishes. From that point, it was a matter of combining the client’s vision with my industry knowledge and experience.
What makes this kitchen a standout?
The kitchen has simple lines, the colors are soft and welcoming, and the space functions beautifully for the owner. Details such as glass cabinets, granite counter tops, and distinctive lighting add special touches that complement the owner’s aesthetic.
Why do you think Trends chose this project as one of the Trends Top 50 Kitchens Designs?
Perhaps because the kitchen serves multiple purposes yet is still a warm, comforting place for the family.
What else do the readers/media need to know about this design project?
The outcome and success of this project is a direct result of Drury Design’s design process.
